FOLLOWING a R1 million sponsorship increase, the 2024 Betway Summer Cup will offer a record-breaking R6 million, making it the richest race in Africa.
Partners Betway and 4Racing, who joined forces three years ago, will showcase South Africa’s best racehorses, fashion and entertainment at Turffontein Racecourse on November 30.
Jonathan Blumberg of Betway Africa said the renowned event is where racing heritage meets urban sophistication. He added that Betway’s commitment was evident in recognising and celebrating the sport, and the country’s rich history while being a key driver in the sport’s growth.
“Our commitment to this relationship underscores our dedication to both the sport of horse racing and the vibrant community that it engages. The R6 million stakes this year (up from R5m in 2023) is a thrilling incentive to make history. It is set to elevate excitement among stakeholders and spectators alike,” said Blumberg.
In addition to the increased stakes, the grooms of all the horses in the Summer Cup race will each receive a R20 000 bonus. The grooms have become an integral part of horse racing and will be acknowledged for their role.
“Grooms are the lifeblood of the sport. Their dedication for and love of horses knows no bounds, so we want to celebrate them and thank them for their continued hard work in the sport,” said Blumberg.
Fundi Sithebe, CEO of Johannesburg-based horse racing operator 4Racing, said the increased sponsorship will capture the imagination of owners and trainers around the country.
“The Betway Summer Cup is distinctly Joburg, and with Betway’s support we have transformed the ‘People’s Race’ into Africa’s richest race with an extraordinary R6 million stakes.
“This increased stake will no doubt attract interest from owners and trainers around the country. Our mission is to gather people from all walks of life to experience the glamour and adrenaline of what promises to be a phenomenal race day,” said Sithebe.
“This event is the start of Gauteng’s festive season. There is no better way to do it than celebrating with ‘Silks In The City’, the theme for the 2024 event.”
