In a heartfelt tribute to his sister Teresa, Mario Sardo will embark on a challenging 7.5 km swim from Robben Island to Blouberg, aiming to raise R400 000 for breast cancer awareness.

Sardo, originally from South Africa and now living with his family in the Algarve, announced his decision to honour his sister Teresa's memory.

Teresa, who was a constant source of inspiration to Mario, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 at the age of 49. This led her to work with the PinkDrive NPC with the shared goal of raising funds for breast cancer awareness.

In 2019, Teresa and Mario had planned the open-water swim to raise funds for the PinkDrive NPC. Unfortunately, just two months before the swim, Teresa’s health deteriorated, and she was advised to postpone the challenge.

Teresa died nine months later, leaving a lasting impact on Mario and their family. "I initially wanted to take on the challenge myself, but after losing Teresa, I was struggling with grief and pain," said Sardo.

"But now, I feel ready—mentally and physically—to finally get back into the water and finish this swim for her."

Teresa was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019 at the age of 49.

The swim, ranked as the 6th most challenging in the Southern Hemisphere, is known for its long distance, cold temperatures, strong tides, and open waters. Sardo has been training rigorously, swimming four times a week under the guidance of a dedicated coach and team, building momentum as he prepares for the upcoming challenge.

Funds raised will be split between the PinkDrive NPC in South Africa and the Algarve Oncology Association (AOA) in Portugal. Both charities focus on early detection of breast cancer, saving lives and providing crucial support for women undergoing treatment. The AOA is currently building a new facility in Faro, where women from rural areas can stay during treatment. Meanwhile, PinkDrive is fundraising to equip mobile mammogram units to reach women who cannot access city hospitals.

"We aim to raise €20,000 for these incredible organisations," Sardo said. "This swim is about raising awareness for breast cancer, sharing our story, and making a difference. This is not just for me—it’s for Teresa. It’s for the women fighting breast cancer and their families."

Sardo reflects on the connection between South Africa and Portugal, sharing that his family’s journey is intertwined with both countries, and through this swim, he hopes to honour his sister's memory while supporting women across both nations.

“The journey we are on together, even after her passing, is a testament to Teresa’s strength and spirit," he said. "I know she is with me as I swim. And I know that through this challenge, we’re continuing to make a difference.”

Sardo is in Cape Town preparing for the swim, which will take place on Friday, 14 March 2025. All are welcome to join Mario's team at Blouberg on the day to encourage him and support this great cause.
