Durban — Thirteen Durban beaches are open while 10 remain temporarily closed due to pollution.
This was revealed after an eThekwini Municipality Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday.
The topic of beaches was on the agenda and Mayor Cyril Xaba called for the weekly assessment of beach water quality to ensure that residents and visitors are kept abreast of the results during the festive season.
This is because the latest beach water quality results revealed that 13 Durban beaches are open while 10 beaches are temporarily closed as investigations to trace the source of pollution are currently under way.
Beaches open for residents and tourists include uShaka Beach, uMhlanga Main Beach, Winkelspruit Beach, Toti Main Beach, Pipeline Beach, Point Beach and uMdloti Beach.
Over 30 pools in the City are also open.
“As we move into the festive season, we should be testing the beach water quality more often to ensure that our beaches are safe for visitors to enjoy. We have had challenges in the past, but the City has made significant efforts to ensure that our beaches are in pristine condition.
“We are hoping for a bumper festive season this December. Visitors must be assured that aside from beaches, there are many other attractions throughout the City,” Xaba said.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Xaba will unveil the state of readiness to host millions of visitors expected to descend on the City during the festive season. The programme will include activations along the beach promenade and the inspection of recreational facilities.
Xaba will conduct a walkabout which includes visiting the Moses Mabhida Stadium People’s Park Kiddies Park, Children Amusement Centre (CAC) pools and uShaka Marine World for a formal programme.
