Joburg - Who can give better pearls of wisdom than a person who has walked the walk and talked the talk?

Esteemed actress and filmmaker Connie Chiume speaks about how she has managed to stay afloat in the entertainment industry after being bestowed with the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th South African Film and Television Awards (Saftas).

In a video shared on the Saftas social media page, Chiume expressed how she felt after being recognised at one of the local prestigious awards.

“You know I am overwhelmed by joy and excitement. I actually feel numb and I am thinking ukuthi the 45 years really that’s how long I have been in the industry. We all know that we are in an industry that is no easy. People normally ask me how do you do it. I don’t know. I think the passion that I have for this industry. I think the way God has wired me there’s no way I could have left. So my attitude is that, I take any job engiyitholayo as a new thing. And I am so happy that National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and South Africa acknowledges my work. It makes me want to work even more harder, wiser and better,” said Chiume

She further expressed how she hoped to be an inspiration with her craft.

“I really appreciate this from the bottom of my heart. I started the industry with a lot of people who are still alive but they gave up. But God has given me the strength to stay on and I hope with this award I am going to inspire someone to say this is our industry, this is where we are and let’s make the best of it,” said Chiume.

Mzansi Magic also lauded the Gomora actress’ win as well deserved for her immeasurable service to the industry that is not all easy.

“Legendary, timeless and an incredible thespian can not describe Mam Connie Chiume. A well deserved Saftas golden horn for her lifetime of service to the industry,” the channel shared

Chiume is popular for many roles on screens and was also among local actors chosen to be part of the award-winning international film Black Panther.

She has also made appearances on popular television shows such as Zone 14, Rhythm City and Gomora.
