The Darkies Golf Club at Empangeni has partnered with VDB Mfuyi Wines for their Monthly Mug tournament. The event is set to offer an exciting day of competitive golf, camaraderie, and exquisite wine.
The Monthly Mug is a significant highlight on the club's calendar, attracting golf enthusiasts across the region. Participants will compete for the esteemed Monthly Mug trophy while enjoying the scenic beauty of the course.
Ian Van Der Brook, one of the co-founders of VDB Mfuyi Wines, said the brand would enhance the experience by providing a selection of its finest wines. He said the event, which would take place on September 28 at 8am in the morning, caters to both seasoned players and newcomers, promoting a spirit of friendly competition and community.
Talking about his journey in the wine industry, Van Der Brook said he got into this industry in 2010 and had worked in various companies.
He said after the Covid-19 pandemic he had been frustrated at work as the company moved. “It cost me to travel to work and that is when my partner Bongani Mdletshe came up with the idea for us to have wine,” he said.
He said the names of the wine are a combination of the Mdletshe clan name and his surname. Van Der Brook said their wine is only delivered and they are not planning to make it available in stores as they want it to be exclusive, as they deliver all over the country. “Maybe in the future that would change,” he said.
He said their wine is drunk by ordinary people and they have a wide range of wine selections which includes vintage. Moreover, he said there are plans to have non-alcoholic wine.
He encouraged people to join them for the golf day and have wine tasting.
“The VDB Mfuyi Wines sponsored prizes worth R3000 for the tournament and will continue to sponsor R1000 monthly for the next 12 months. A prize-giving ceremony will follow the formalities,” he said.
