“La Traviata -The Ballet”

Joburg Ballet’s award-winning “La Traviata -The Ballet” will be staging five performances at The Teatro this weekend.

The dance production, which won a Naledi Theatre Award in 2021, is renowned as one of the finest ballets by the acclaimed choreographer, Veronica Paeper.

The leading South African choreographer, who specialises in the classical style, has created an extensive repertoire of ballets.

With “La Traviata -The Ballet” being one of her most popular works, it was created in Cape Town in 1990.

Based on the 19th-century story of the Lady of the Camellias, it is a deeply moving portrait of a woman who sacrifices everything for the man she loves.

“The ballet is set to the unforgettable music of Verdi’s opera La Traviata, arranged and adapted for the ballet by composer Allan Stephenson,” the producers said.

The production was also presented in the UK where critics described it as “graceful, passionate and ravishingly romantic” and “an utterly compelling production.”

Meanwhile, the Joburg Ballet is bringing four casts in the two leading roles.

They include Shannon Glover and Marlon Sales, who will take to the stage on Friday, August 2 August at 8pm, as well as on Sunday, August 4, at 3pm.

Nicole Ferreira-Dill and Bruno Miranda will dance on Saturday, August 3 at 3pm, Monike Cristina and Ruan Galdino will feature at 8pm on the same day, while Tammy Higgins and Revil Yon will take centre stage on Sunday’s 11am show.

Meanwhile, principal dancer Glover, who is celebrating her 20th anniversary with the Joburg Ballet, will be commemorated with an onstage tribute at the end of the opening night.

The organisation’s CEO, Elroy Fillis-Bell, said in a statement that he is thrilled to stage the show at the venue for the first time.

He added: “It’s also a privilege to have Veronica working with our beautiful dancers in bringing this searing story of love and sacrifice to the stage.”
