WASHINGTON – South Africa's Raven Klaasen and his New Zealand partner Michael Venus came back from the brink to beat Andy and Jamie Murray on Friday to progress to the semifinals at the Citi Open, ATP 500 tournament, in Washington DC.
The British pair took the first set on a tiebreak but similarly lost the second as all 24 games followed serve.
The third seeds took the match 6-7 (3) 7-6 (6) 10-7 in an hour and 52 minutes.
However, the SA/Kiwi pair had to dig deep to win. They went a set down and then saved a match-point in the second-set tie-break before coming through in the deciding match tie-break.
Undeterred, the brothers bounced back to take a 7-5 lead but the South African and New Zealander won five points in a row to finally prevail.
On Saturday (around 2.30am Sunday morning SA time) Venus and Klaasen will face second-seeds, Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, for a place in the final.
