It may have come as something as a shock to see Orlando Pirates not sign any new players in the January transfer window ahead of the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs this weekend, but the Sea Robbers seem to be more than happy with the players they have.

Earlier this week, Chiefs announced three new signings in the form of Tashreeq Morris, Thabo Cele and Makabi Lilepo on Monday.

In fact, the January transfer window closed on Tuesday, and therefore the AmaKhosi left it until the last minute before they put pen to paper.

While Chiefs were furiously inking out the contracts, the Pirates management would have had their focus on the game itself.

Strange response

Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi on Tuesday in a press conference, however, had a rather unusual take on the issue when asked if his side would still be looking to add to their player stocks.

"Coaches are very greedy. They are always looking for players that are [available],” said Ncikazi.

It is true that Pirates have excelled this season as they are second on the Betway Premiership log, and at six points behind Mamelodi Sundowns they are their closest challengers.

To their credit, Pirates are through to the quarterfinals of the Caf Champions League and will also have a an eye on the Nedbank Cup.

"We try and focus on what we have. I think we have enough quality within the club.

"As I said earlier, you will always look for something more in the market, but if there is anything that management and the coaches feel is necessary, we will add that.”
