According to reports, SAFA president Danny Jordaan’s hold on his position appears increasingly tenuous as a faction of the National Executive Committee (NEC) is poised to propose his resignation in favour of Irvin Khoza’s interim leadership.

This critical meeting, scheduled for Saturday, marks a significant turning point as it is the first NEC gathering since Jordaan’s appearance in court last year on fraud charges.

Bhudha Mathathe, a prominent member of the NEC, speaking to the Sowetan website, confirmed the brewing discontent among certain members of the committee who are lobbying vigorously for Jordaan to step aside.

There are reports that some members are even suggesting that he should refrain from chairing the meeting entirely.

This rare move highlights the growing fracture within the leadership of Safa as it grapples with scandal and the need for renewed credibility.

Sources close to the situation indicate that Jordaan is mobilising support to solidify his position amidst fears of an internal uprising.

Suggestions are his tenure has predominantly benefited from a cadre of loyalists, many of whom are believed to have gained from his administration in various capacities.

However, discontent has been simmering, and his ability to quell this dissent is being put to the test.

In a bid to safeguard his standing, reports suggest that Jordaan’s allies have attempted to prevent three dissenting NEC members from attending the crucial meeting.

Despite these efforts, the venue and specific agenda of the Saturday meeting have not yet been confirmed, leaving the outcome shrouded in uncertainty.

The situation surrounding Jordaan is emblematic of broader challenges facing Safa, which has endured criticism over governance issues and the handling of football affairs in the country.

As the clock ticks down to the NEC meeting, the spotlight is firmly on Jordaan, whose fate as president hangs in the balance.
