Pieter-Steph du Toit has been in inspirational form for the Stormers and Springboks in 2018, and that saw him named as the WP Rugby Union’s Player of the Year at their awards evening on Tuesday night.
Du Toit has had to switch between lock and flank throughout the season, and forced his way into the Bok side in the No 7 jersey after initially operating as the reserve lock on the bench.
Meanwhile, Sergeal Petersen has been setting the Currie Cup alight this season, and after a long slog back from injury, it has all proved to be worth it for him at WP.
Having moved from the Cheetahs in the off-season, Petersen tore a knee ligament in March, and didn’t get a chance to compete for a Stormers spot.
He only returned to the field in August, on WP’s two-match tour of France ahead of the Currie Cup, and impressed coach John Dobson to the extent that he claimed a permanent starting spot.
Eight tries later, and Petersen has justified his coach’s faith in him, and that hard work has also been recognised by his teammates.
Petersen received the Players’ Player Award at the WP Rugby Awards evening on Tuesday night, as well as the Most Promising Player.
He was the big winner alongside centre Damian de Allende, who was chosen as the Best Back and MVP (Most Valuable Player).
Another Springbok in Steven Kitshoff (Best Forward) was recognised for a stellar season.
Bok captain Siya Kolisi was handed a special sponsor’s award for leadership, focus and passion.
Province will be back on the field on Saturday in the Currie Cup semi-final against the Blue Bulls at Newlands (5pm kickoff).
What a night at the 2018 WPRFU awards. Congratulations to all the award winners. #wpjoulekkerding #WeStandTogether pic.twitter.com/6FnQjMYFvn
