JOHANNESBURG - The Golden Lions are enjoying a two-week break before returning on October 12 to complete their Currie Cup round-robin schedule with a match against the Pumas in Nelspruit. Jacques van der Westhuyzen pick his five rookies who have impressed him so far
Shaun Reynolds
The 23-year-old has tasted Super Rugby before, but he has shown in the last few weeks he can comfortably slot in as first choice back-up to Elton Jantjies next season. With 72 points from his five appearances so far, Reynolds is the leading point-scorer in the competition.
Hacjivah Dayimani
The fleet-footed No 8 has been one of the revelations. He has played some Super Rugby and will go into next year’s competition as a real contender for a regular spot on matchdays. With six tries he is the joint leading try-scorer in the competition. He has used his wonderful skills and speed to beat defenders at will.
James Venter
The little-known flanker has been one of the unsung heroes of the Lions, his work-rate at the breakdown ensuring he has been spoken about more and more each week. Venter has been on the fringes of higher honours over the last two years and could come into his own next year.
Rhyno Herbst
With Franco Mostert now playing his club rugby in England and there being uncertainty about the future of Andries Ferreira, the Lions may have to throw young Herbst into the mix in 2019. He has performed well next to Springbok Marvin Orie and the two could become the Lions’ next second row pairing.
Wandisile Simelane
The exciting SA Under-20 star, who can play wing and centre, has yet to get a start in a Lions jersey this season but it has mattered little because he has made such an impact off the bench. Simelane's eye for the gap, his speed and general feel for the game make him a huge attacking threat.
