Johannesburg – Diego Rosier will be taking a major step up on his career path when he captains Griquas at the youthful age of 21 in the inaugural Africa T20 Cup competition which starts later this week.
“Diego has been a leader virtually his entire career, certainly from the time when I first coached him as a schoolboy and he was a very successful captain of SA under-19 as well,” said Griquas head coach, JP Triegaardt.
“This is a new level for him but we do have a very young side with only a few really senior players. I am sure he can rely on the likes of Werner Coetsee and Reeza Hendricks for their input. What I have always liked about Diego is the energy he brings to the job. He is also unlikely to play much franchise cricket at the moment so he brings continuity to our leadership structure.
Triegaardt has recently returned from Sri Lanka where he was part of the management team of South Africa’s Emerging Squad’s successful tour so he has not seen a lot of his players of late.
“Fortunately we are in Pool C so we will only be playing our matches in the third week of September so we still have time on our side to get ready for action. We will be playing some warm-up matches in Potchefstroom and we will also be working on sharpening our T20 skills.
“All the groups are tough and ours will be no exception, but obviously playing at home will be to our advantage. But we will still have to get the job done to get through our pool.”
The other sides in Pool C are Eastern Province, KwaZulu-Natal and Namibia and all matches will be played at Kimberley’s Diamond Oval from September 18 to 20.
