Durban – Rain had the final say in the domestic One Day Cup clash between the Dolphins and Titans with the match declared a no result in Durban on Sunday.
Set 213 for victory, the visitors reached 78 for one after just 13.4 overs thanks to an aggressive start from captain Henry Davids (35), before the forecasted rain eventually arrived at a gloomy Kingsmead.
Earlier, a record domestic eighth-wicket partnership between Daryn Smit and Kyle Abbott rescued the Dolphins from being bowled out inside their allotted overs to reach a respectable total.
Proteas fast bowler Abbott smashed a career-best 45 off 54, while Smit made 47 off 76 with the two putting on an unbeaten 90, breaking the previous record of 88 held jointly by Boeta Dippenaar and Dillon du Preez (2007/08) as well as Frans Cronje and Ian Howell (1993/94).
The Dolphins had begun poorly by losing Jonathan Vandiar in the third over for six thanks to brilliant catch by Roelof van der Merwe at second slip off Ethy Mbhalati.
Morne van Wyk (25), Vaughn van Jaarsveld (nought) and Khaya Zondo (six) all followed cheaply leaving the hosts on 52 for four – fast bowler Rowan Richards (2/47) accounting for two of those batsman.
David Miller (20) and Cody Chetty (14) added 32 for the fifth wicket, before both fell with the score on 84, while Robbie Frylinck (22) helped Smit take the hosts past 100 in the 29th over.
But they were reduced to 122 for seven when Van der Merwe (2/31) cleaned up Frylinck, before Abbott and Smit took charge during a 15-over show that helped the Dolphins reach 212 for seven.
David then helped the Titans off to a flying start after a superb 26-ball innings, before Craig Alexander produced the breakthrough with the score on 51.
Jacques Rudolph (17) and Heino Kuhn (11) continued to bat well before drizzle initially forced the players off at 3pm and they never returned. – Sapa
