Tip of the week: Always check on YouTube you are doing the right thing

Mrs Mac suggested we call in a plumber as the kitchen sink mixer had developed a slow leak. Wounded to the core by the fact Mrs M wanted a plumber to fix a simple leak, I tackled it myself.

Switching off the water, dismantling the tap, buying the washers and putting it all back together without any sign of a leak was straightforward. However, what I found when I stripped down the tap concerned me. When we fill a glass of water from a tap it comes out crystal clear, but what about all the nasties we don’t see?

It took me a while to get the scale off the mixer and to clean all the other parts our water travels over. I doubt there was anything that could cause disease but it reminded me that any fitting, pipe or container used to store or carry food or water needs to be serviced and cleaned regularly.

So, switch off the water mains and strip down all your taps, clean the parts and make sure the washers are in a good condition. Always check on YouTube you are doing the right thing.

Also check the filters in extractors or cooker hoods to ensure they have not become saturated with fat. This is often the cause of kitchen fires. With winter coming, it is a good time to check chimneys.
