Tip of the week: Advice on swimming pools

For obvious reasons summer always brings out the questions and advice on swimming pools. Louise, deep into her retirement years but still looking after things around the house herself, rang me.

She assures me that the way to put your well-point water into your swimming pool is through a garden sprinkler.

The finer the spray the better, and from the highest available height. The more the water passes through air, the more it gets oxidised, reducing smell and staining.

Getting oxygen into your pool water is also an excellent idea. I have a venturi fitted to my pump inflow pipe so whenever the pump is on my pool, it is getting well aerated.

Also remember that most well-point water has a low PH so introduce soda ash to raise it. Adding alum powder or crystals will also help keep the water clear.
