Fuddy-duddy bidders had better bring the smelling salts to Cannons auction on Tuesday. Hilton has never seen the likes of this sale since Fifty Shades of Grey showed at the local movie house.
In 75 years of trading, Cannon & Cannon has not had to solicit bids for collectable lots that are, well, “different” shall we say? To start off, there is a sculpted sexy Art Deco dominatrix figurine wearing garter stockings - and very little else.
The cane she is holding clearly does not indicate sight disabilities. The attention to detail is so precise and the sculpture so lifelike the Cannons were not quite sure how to display the punishing lady in a showroom frequented by families. “But you can’t hang fig leaves on Michelangelo’s David, can you?” Noelene Cannon asks somewhat rhetorically.
The origin of the erotica? “The dominatrix figurine is being left behind by a man moving to the UK and there are some naughty netsukes that came from an elderly gent from Durban who is downsizing,” she explains. Enough said.
Cannons’ sale will, however, also include more traditional collectables.
