Cannon’s Auctioneers of Hilton achieved some huge, but satisfactory, discrepancies between pre-sale estimates and actual knock-down prices at its sale of antiques, collectables and art on July 31.
The two major surprises were:
* A World War ll Japanese Samurai sword in a leather-bound scabbard, possibly by Yasumoto Norimitsu, fetched R16000, compared to the top pre-sale estimate of R4500.
* A pair of Victorian ewers (serving vessels) of different origins: the one is solid silver and made by Stephen Smith of London, and the other electroplated and produced by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield. The pair sold for R19000, almost double the pre-sale estimate of up to R10000.

Other impressive prices fetched at the auction were:
* 9ct gold bracelet, each link set with a gold R1 coin - R19000.
* Victorian 9ct rose gold, fetter link fob chain - R18000.
* 18ct white gold and 10 stone art deco diamond pendant - R28000.
* Victorian oval shaped, quarter veneered burr walnut loo table - R19 000.
* Regency mahogany twin pedestal dining table - R56000.
