Ashbey's Galleries is on August 3 offering a wide range of reproduction French furniture, chandeliers, mirrors and lights in a special one-day Frenchtique clearance auction, starting at 10am at its showrooms at 43 Church Street, Cape Town.

Inge-Marie Roberts of Ashbey’s says the 166 imported lots on auction will make ideal components to introduce a French-inspired mood to selected parts of the home.

The reproduction furniture on offer was inspired by the work of 18th century French provincial manufacturers who usually produced items that were functional but not as elaborate as furniture made for the French court, with finishes less showy than royal pieces.

The surfaces normally had either a stained or painted finish, which was more affordable and required less maintenance than high-gloss finishes.

Decoration techniques tended to consist of carved panels and engraved decorative motifs such as flowers and curved lines, with the curved lines replicated in the cabriole legs of French provincial furniture.

Ashbey’s Galleries is now accepting last-minute consignments for its September 12 major auction of fine arts, antiques, silver, and jewellery.
