Julien’s Auctions of Beverley Hills, California, achieved amazing results at its recent two-day sale of items from the estate of Burt Reynolds, who died in September.

The climax of the auction was the sale of the 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am custom-built by Bandit Movie Cars for Reynolds and his business partner Gene Kennedy.

The vehicle, synonymous with Reynolds’ iconic character “Bandit” from box-office hit Smokey and the Bandit, sold for $317500 (over R4.5million).

Reynolds used this car on several cross-country rallies to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the film in 2017. The car has 70000 miles (112000km) on the clock.

Reynolds wanted a Trans-Am for himself because Smokey was his favourite film but all the original cars used during filming were destroyed.
