Wingate Park is regarded as an ideal family suburb, one where young couples can move in to start a family and stay put until the children are out of school before thinking of moving on.

Homes in the area are established, spacious and sturdy and augur well for raising a family in a central location that lies in proximity to essential amenities.

Karien de Jongh, an estate agent for Seeff Pretoria East, says: “Wingate Park is suited to young families, who want to raise their children there until after their tertiary education, as it offers many options for nursery schools, primary schools and high schools. It is a feeder area for Laerskool Elarduspark and Hoërskool Waterkloof. It also boasts the Pretoria Chinese School.”

Easy access to all the surrounding main routes, such as Delmas Road and the R21 and N1, is another plus. De Jongh says the estates are exclusive due to the extra security.

“Wingate Golf Estate is an established favourite in the area. Although it is not part of Wingate Park Country Club, it is on the border, so it offers views over the greens.

“Next to Wingate Golf Estate are smaller complexes, more suitable for smaller families or executives, all of which offer easy access to Delmas Road and Solomon Mahlangu Drive.”

Regarding freehold market stock, a recessed market has necessitated the importance of renovating one’s property as homes that are done up will sell quicker, says De Jongh.

“Renovated properties are more lucrative. It is better to renovate and hold onto your investment until the market has changed for the better,” she advises.

The sub-par economy has resulted in a downward trend in property sales in the past three years, in line with most markets nationally, says De Jongh.

For owners of top-end properties, one option would be to rent out one’s home with a view to re-evaluating once the market has improved, says De Jongh.

Also shoring up the area’s family-friendliness are the many shopping options. There’s Elarduspark Shopping Centre, just across Delmas Road, from a selection that includes Woodlands Boulevard Shopping Centre, Parkview Shopping Centre and Menlyn Park Shopping Centre.

“There are also golfing and bowling options. The Wingate Park Country Club boasts an 18-hole championship golf course and five greens for bowling,” says De Jongh.

Her partner at Seeff Pretoria East Unita Conradie says residents are also surrounded by nature spots and have perfect weekend getaways to select from.

“For nature lovers and mountain bike enthusiasts, there’s Rietvlei Nature Reserve,” she says. Conradie says the completion of the “ghost” mall in Delmas Road will add much-needed vitality to the area. She has it on good authority that negotiations to that effect are at an advanced stage.

“Its successful completion will have a positive impact on properties in Wingate Park, Elardus Park and Moreleta Park,” she says

I settled for this area after looking

around in Pretoria East. It’s so calm

and close to the highways and

most of the shopping centres in the

area. I bought my property because it

borders the golf course. I can look on

to the greens from my stoep.

That was the biggest selling point

for me. - Juan du Preez with wife Vanessa and daughter Charee
