One of the Cape Town CBD’s most familiar landmarks, Grand Daddy Hotel in Long Street, is among the lots for Reliance Auctions’s next multi-property sale in Joburg.
The four-star boutique hotel, operating in a heritage building at 38 Long Street, features South Africa’s only rooftop Airstream trailer park and a sky bar. The seven authentic American-sourced Airstream aluminium trailers have individual decor themes that reflect a typical South African road trip.
Outdoor movie shows are also presented at the rooftop Pink Flamingo cinema. In addition to luxury rooms and two “designer private suites”, Grand Daddy Hotel features a highly-rated restaurant Thirty Ate, while The Venue on the first floor is a popular corporate and private function facility.
David Soutter, chief executive of Reliance Auctions, says there has been strong interest in the auction of the historic building which has become internationally known particularly because of its innovative trailer accommodation on the rooftop.
“Long Street is renowned as a melting pot of diverse pubs and restaurants, shops that range from high-end retailers to quirky second-hand clothing outlets, antique and book shops, lively market stalls, vibrant night life and several historic buildings restored to their former glory. The Grand Daddy Hotel is a typical example. It opened in 1895 as the Hotel Metropole - on July 1, 1895 the Cape Argus described it as a ‘city landmark’.”
Soutter says the hotel, on a plot of 567m2 with a gross lettable area of 2700m2 - being auctioned as part of a portfolio disposal - is an integral part of Cape Town’s street culture. “It is the perfect base to explore the many tourist attractions of Cape Town,” he adds.
