A flock of about 580 sheep is a major attraction at a clearance auction of the assets of the liquidated Swartland sheep and crop farm, Windheuwel Boerdery, by Home & Hectare Real Estate (formerly BKB) on site in Piketberg on August 7 at 11am.
Catalogued for the sale are the 570 Meatmaster ewes and lambs and 10 Meatmaster rams as well as agricultural vehicles, tractors, trailers and implements. Equipment includes the reputable Challenger crop sprayer with automatic steering.
The Meatmaster is a fat-tailed breed of domestic sheep native to South Africa with wool that does not require shearing. Bred in the early 1990s from various sheep breeds, the Meatmaster was created to improve the meat characteristics of African fat-tailed sheep which could handle dry conditions but were slow to mature and had poor fat distribution.
The composite breed - which feature increased muscle and fat content while retaining fat-tailed sheep’s resistance to tick-borne diseases - have been exported around the world, including in Australia and Canada.
The farming town of Piketberg lies at the foot of the Piketberg Mountain range and is just over an hour’s drive from the Cape Town CBD.
