Among the lots for Broll Auctions and Sales’ next multi-property auction in Joburg on May 22 are two KwaZulu-Natal filling stations. The auction will start at noon at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, with online bidding facilities available for KZN buyers.

The filling stations on offer are at:

* 33 Old Main Road, Gillitts, in Hillcrest. The pumping output is about 450 000 litres a month and the petrol station is being auctioned with the land and business rights.

* 136 Crompton Street, Pinetown. Here an average of about 400 000 litres are pumped monthly and the land size is over 2600m². Several other on-site businesses lease property from the filling station owner.

Brett Pozniak, who is handling the sale, says such business operations are assets that stay resilient even in the worst economic slumps.

“Fuel retailing, in fact, is one of very few industries that can claim to be relatively recession-proof. The fuel retail sector has grown consistently in recent years and has shown to be capable of surviving ratings agencies’ downgrading, poor performance by the rand and South Africa’s negative economic growth rates.”

Studies have shown that service stations in South Africa have a combined annual turnover of over R200billion, with South Africa the biggest consumer of fuel on the African continent.

“With a growing middle-class population that owns more vehicles, fuel retailing should remain profitable in the foreseeable future. Both the KZN filling stations on offer on May 22 are well located and represent sound investment opportunities. SA service stations also offer alternative profit opportunities, such as convenience stores, which have become increasingly popular, as well as rental income from other business operations on site.”

Other properties on offer include:

* Two iconic Joburg CBD properties: the historic Broadcast House, home of SA radio for decades, and a large office complex in Gandhi Square.

* Warehouses, factories and offices in areas such as Pretoria, Isando, Alrode, Heriotdale and Randburg.

* Commercial properties in Joburg, Polokwane, Mpumalanga, Kempton Park, Sandton and Winburg.

* Residential property at Fourways and Mondeor.

* Development land in Centurion.
