Trendy Parkhurst offers a rare amalgam: a relaxed lifestyle in a neighbourhood that throbs to a vibrant cafe culture.
When you add projections that envisage property values to hold steady for the foreseeable future, it becomes clear why Parkhurst’s popularity is enduring, and why you cannot go wrong by investing here.

She says residents stroll freely through the area in the evenings. “Apart from street-side cafe dining, Parkhurst offers a lifestyle where families walk their dogs, community events take place in the lively 4th Avenue and there’s a glamorous mix of couture, interior design, dining and entertainment on your doorstep,” says De Wet.
She says establishments such as The Wolfpack and upmarket trattoria Cafe Del Sol TRE as exceptionally popular.
Parkhurst has a dynamic not easily matched in Joburg, and that’s refreshing from an investment point of view as it offers buyers the alternative to being locked behind high walls, says De Wet.

A total of 140 sales have been recorded in Parkhurst over the past year. The majority (66) were homes marked north of R3 million. A single sectional title sold for R2.05m and an estate freehold home that went for R2m were the only exceptions in an otherwise all full title property sales list that included 15 land sales ranging in price from R800 000 to R3m, says De Wet. She says a total of 126 properties within a huge price bracket were on sale in Parkhurst as of last week, ranging from R2.1m to R6.8m
Kathy Cohen, De Wet’s partner in Parkhurst at Property.CoZa, says demand comes from across the entire property-buying demographic spectrum.
“Young professionals are attracted to the area because of the proximity to work, the Gautrain, good schools and the coffee shops and cafes that fill the pavements,” says Cohen.
She says the community atmosphere is a strong attraction for older folk.

“Older residents who have scaled down enjoy the timeless feeling of a good quality of life with amenities close by,” says Cohen.
While some buyers sought an address within walking distance of the restaurant scene, others bought to start an Airbnb, says Cohen.
Parkhurst was established in 1904 and by the 1970s had its first antique shop, which was the precursor to its being known as “Antique Alley”. The bustling cafe lifestyle with which we now mostly associate it followed a few years later.
Parkhurst is rated slightly more expensive than Greenside but well below Greenside East.

I have been living in Parkhurst for six years. It is a wonderful neighbourhood with a great selection of smaller properties. The demographic is diverse and there is also a great variety of people of different ages. The suburb is well situated for easier travel to work and to the shops and other centres.
