An auction offering “a sensational selection” of jewellery, watches, artworks, objets d’art, designer ware, collectables and carpets will mark the start of Kenny Finberg Auctions’ big sales for the holiday season - just in time for Christmas and Hannukah.
“The ‘Chrismukah’ sale will provide an opportunity to find a gift to spoil someone special while also investing in an heirloom for the future,” says auctioneer Kenny Finberg. “The selection of auction items will be vast and we anticipate completing 80 to 100 lots per hour.”
A primary component of the auction will be the jewellery and watch section, with more than 150 lots available.
The watches for men and women include offerings from Rolex, Cartier, IWC, Breitling, Tag and Omega.
“Estimates will begin from as low as R1000. There is a major resurgence in watch collecting and it looks as though this is becoming a serious area of investment for the future,” Finberg says.
The jewellery on offer includes a comprehensive collection of gold, platinum and silver pieces for both entry level and serious collectors.
“The highlights will include a 16ct diamond tennis bracelet, a pair of 5ct cluster diamond earrings and a 6ct eternity diamond ring, as well as beautiful necklaces, bracelets and brooches, encrusted with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and tanzanites. In addition, there will be a selection of GIA-certified unset diamonds.”
A substantial collection of fine art will also go under the hammer, with more than 70 lots of traditional and contemporary works from both South African and international masters, as well as rare works by new “must-have” artists, Finberg says.
“Of particular importance among the paintings and prints is a rare and imposing work by William Kentridge, produced in 2008 in collaboration with Gavronsky and Shakinovsky, from the Expectant Fluid series, from an edition of 18.”
Other rare works include Sam Nhlengethwa’s tribute to Peter Clarke and a fine Lionel Smit.
The art selection will also feature works by artists who are among the “who’s who” of the contemporary art world in South Africa: Anton Kannemeyer, Deborah Bell, Walter Battiss, Douglas Portway, Beezy Bailey, Colbert Mashile and others, he says.
“There will also be major works by Pranas Domsaitis, David Botha, Terence McCaw, as well as a comprehensive collection of pieces by international artists. Estimates will begin from as little as R500.”
Added into the mix on the auction floor will be a variety of Persian carpets, rugs and runners, the highlight being a fine, investment quality silk Hereke of wonderful colour, he says.
“Also on auction will be silverware, ranging from tea sets to an early 20th- century English, hallmarked Hanukiah (Menorah).
“An array of porcelain tea sets, including Susie Cooper and Poole, from the Art Deco period, will also be on offer.”
Finberg believes items from the single-owner collection of vintage handbags in snakeskin, crocodile patent and the likes will make ideal gifts.
“The variety of items on offer at the auction is astounding. It will include a rare, vintage pair of carved tusks; oriental ware, including 19th-century watercolours and ceramics; and a small selection of Roman terracotta sculptures that will hold pride of place at the auction, along with a particularly fine model of a galleon.
“A single lot of seven stamp albums will also be among other unusual collectables.”
The auction will be held at The Radisson Hotel at the V&A Waterfront, at 10am December 2. Viewing will begin at 9am.
