High price for film suit

The water-stained, grey woollen suit worn by Gene Kelly in the classic 1952 MGM musical Singin’ in the Rain was sold on auction five years ago for £65000 (now about R1.2million).

The garment was bought by Robert Earl, the founder of the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain.

Earl had been after it since it resurfaced on the auction market early in 2013.

The piece of Hollywood history may have come at a price but like the film, which also starred Debbie Reynolds, it has aged well with time.

And it will probably escalate in value in years to come.
