Sought-after Tretchikoff painting Irises in a Vase is the heavyweight for Cannon & Cannon Auctioneers’s final sale of art, antiques and collectables on November 26 at 9am at the Quarry Centre in Hilton. It will, however, be just one of hundreds of lots for Cannon’s biggest sale of the year.
The Tretchikoff work - with a presale top estimate of R800000 - is one of over 80 paintings by artists who include Gabriel de Jongh, Hennie Niemann junior and senior, Errol Boyley and Terence McCaw.
Another sale highlight will be a quality Atmos clock (model 540), still with booklet in original packaging.
Atmos is the brand name of a mechanical torsion pendulum clock manufactured by Jaeger-LeCoultre in Switzerland which does not need to be wound manually. It gets its energy to run from temperature and atmospheric pressure changes and can run for years without human intervention.
The first of these extremely collectable clocks was made in 1928.
Bidding should also be strong for:
* A large circular silver tray by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths of London dating back to 1911. It has a raised pie-crust edge, central coat of arms and five knurl feet. The tray weighs a hefty 6kg and has a top presale estimate of R70000.
* A “superb quality” Sarmento oval silver tureen, with cover, on a stand originating from Lisbon, Portugal. The tureen, at 2.6kg, is expected to sell for up to R30000.
* Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 2012 gold set of coins (R140000).
* A English bible dating back to 1564 (“Treacle Bible”).
* A German WWII Third Reich diplomatic official’s dagger and scabbard, and a German WWII Third Reich army officer’s dagger.
* Bronze male torso by Maureen Langley, 56cm high, one of only five cast.
Noelene Cannon says: “Our auction floor is chock-a-bloc with silver, jewellery, books, smalls, collectables, militaria and furniture.
“The number of consignments has been overwhelming. We will also be selling a giant chandelier - so enormous it couldn’t fit in our galleries.”
