HANDY MAC: Top work ethic

Mrs Mac is ecstatic – trenching for the installation of fibre has started in our close. I am, however, more interested to see how well the trenching work is carried out and how much collateral damage ensues.

I feel sorry for one neighbour who keeps his grassy verge immaculate. He is out there every weekend, without fail, nursing it. I was beginning to wonder if it is worth all the effort we put into our verges as the land belongs to the council rather than the homeowner, so the fibre companies have carte blanche to dig, as long as they have council permission.

I have heard horror stories from other residents about damage to water meters, driveways and plants so I will keep a careful eye on proceedings. Hopefully, once all the companies have done their thing, the end result will justify the means.

I must compliment the first team who dug in our area about the long hours they work. Every contractor I know would love to have a workforce as dedicated as this.

They arrive well before 6am. On some nights they were only packing up at 6pm, plus they were here on Saturdays. Also impressive is that everyone was working – not like a council team anywhere in the world, where usually you have five guys watching one guy dig the hole.
