HANDY MAC: DIY dream gifts

Don gives our readers advice about the best DIY tools to put on the gift list. December 14 has come and gone, and hopefully so have all your contractors and you can finally turn your thoughts to Christmas and presents. We all love spoils.

Firstly, I would say if you are thinking of tools as a gift for your partner, spend the money on one decent tool rather than a few cheaper ones. Please stay away from gimmick tools that claim they will not only remove nails, but can also be used to stir your tea.

I suggest you try to kill two birds with one stone: buy your partner a nice DIY tool, and then smile sweetly and point out a few things that need doing around the house.

Below is what I believe a Christmas shopping list of tools should include. I believe the first thing every half-decent handyman needs is a workbench with a vice.

This will ensure your dining room table does not get scratched, and you are not called in to assist as the extra pair of hands that is always needed to hold something.

◆ A set of screwdrivers, both flat and star.

◆ A claw hammer with a steel shaft.

◆ A tape measure capable of measuring at least 5m.

◆ A set of flat spanners, a set of socket spanners and pliers, including long nose, lineman and side cutters.

◆ A cordless drill with a spare battery; only a good and reliable make.

◆ Saws. These won’t be used often, apart from a hack-saw, which does most things, I spoilt myself with a powered band saw and a table skill-saw.

◆ A spirit level to ensure your partner cannot complain because you did not hang something level.

◆ An all-purpose utility knife. I must finish the year by thanking my readers for your loyal support, your many kind words and continually tasking me with interesting questions.
