Bringing a touch of the outdoors inside a home can do wonders for brightening the atmosphere - especially as we head towards autumn and begin shutting ourselves indoors.

For homeowners looking to sell during the cooler months, adding greenery can help freshen up a home and make the space more appealing to potential buyers, says Adrian Goslett, regional director and chief executive of Re/Max of Southern Africa.

Acknowledging that living plants are far more appealing than plastic impersonations, Re/Max of Southern Africa has compiled a list of ways to help homeowners keep their house plants alive and thriving:

1 Study your seedling

Research your pot plant to discover what kinds of conditions it prefers. Then do your best to recreate those conditions to ensure that your plant has the best chances of survival.

2 Primping and pruning

Be sure to dust off your pot plants regularly. Doing so will help ensure that the leaves are better able to absorb sunlight.

3 Drainage dilemmas

When potting your house plant, be sure that there is adequate drainage by layering small pebbles or a coffee filter at the bottom of the pot. Most plants don't like their roots to sit in water.
