Feedback: Drive gaining momentum

The drive to ensure all building work in areas covered by the Building Industry Bargaining Council is carried out by registered and compliant contractors only is gaining momentum.

I am pleased to report I was contacted by a professional practice who assured me all documentation issued by them will indicate tenderers must be registered and compliant and that proof will have to be provided by the successful tenderer by submitting the relevant certificate.

The next step is to ensure those contractors who attempt to sidestep the issue by registering only a few of their employees are caught out for fraud. I had a case the other day where a contractor who is doing a contract valued at R2.5 million has only two registered employees.

In a similar vein, the executive director of the Master Builders Association comments in its latest newsletter: While on the subject of good news, another positive development has seen the Building Industry Bargaining Council issue notices to a wide audience, among the “givers of work”, based on advice received from senior legal counsel, which seeks to further level the playing fields and ensure awareness among that constituency of the legal requirement to contract only with registered and compliant contractors in our region.
