Each chess piece is hand-crafted, hand-painted and varnished. The white figures represent political characters of the apartheid regime, including a regal Evita Bezuidenhout, and the black pieces represent leading struggle veterans active on the eve of democracy in 1994.

The black vanguard is guarded by pawns from Umkhonto we Sizwe, and the white pawn protectors are members of the old SA Police. Lifelike players in the set include Nelson and Winnie Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and FW de Klerk.
