A grey woollen suit which was worn by Kim Novak in the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock thriller Vertigo fetched $28750 (about R400000) at a Bonhams auction.

The Edith Head-designed suit had the recognition factor for fans.

“That’s something we look for when we sell costumes,” says Catherine Williamson, director of Fine Books & Manuscripts and Entertainment Memorabilia for Bonhams.

The suit had a pre-sale estimate of up to $20 000.
