The iconic views of Table Mountain, being well served by all forms of public transport, including an excellent MyCiTi service, loads of recreational opportunities and residential property prices more favourable than other sea-facing precincts makes Milnerton an ideal neighbourhood for families.
This is the view of resident and father Kevin Melnick. “We’ve lived in Milnerton for some time. It’s an established neighbourhood and our children attended local schools. Crime rates are relatively low and there’s an extremely effective network of neighbourhood support systems in place.
“I’m an occasional golfer and the Milnerton Golf Club can be as challenging as any links course when the Cape Doctor picks up. “The cycle paths are excellent. Aside from the obvious recreational purposes, they facilitate commuters riding to the CBD from the northern suburbs.”
Adding to the family feel of the area, Rawson Property Group sales partner Dave Zieve is noticing a trend of children who have grown up in the area returning to rent or invest in Milnerton properties.
“These younger buyers are finding the prices affordable. They are able to find flats, lock-up-and-go units in secure villages and fixer-upper homes that fit their pocket and lifestyle, and the beach is a hop and skip away,” says Zieve. He says it’s a buyer’s market.
“The lead up to the elections saw sales stagnate. Now I anticipate activity picking up. The market is looking for renovation opportunities in good areas. “If you’re lucky, you can find a free-standing four-bedroom home with pool, garage, and sometimes a flatlet, for around R3million in Milnerton proper.”

He says average erf sizes are in the 980m² region. Koeberg Road is undergoing a metamorphosis, with numerous residential properties rezoned commercial. This busy road creates exposure for businesses and the trend will probably continue in the short term.
Cape Town rentals outstrip those in other metropoles and this is also true of the western seaboard. “Milnerton offers the total package at prices that are significantly lower than other suburbs close by. “There are great shopping opportunities. The recently-completed Centre Point mall is a game-changer. There are good government and private schools, excellent public transport and loads of recreational opportunities,” Zieve says.

1 Outdoors
With awesome views of Table Mountain, Milnerton Golf Club is a must for avid golfers. The 18-hole links provides challenging conditions when the south-easter picks up. Visitors are welcome (021 552 1047).
Commuting from Milnerton to the Cape Town CBD is easy. The flat, traffic-free cycleway runs from the West Coast and into the city. It runs parallel to the MyCiTi bus network. Catch the bus if the wind blows.

2 Eat
Boasting a 50-year heritage, Mike’s Kitchen is an institution. Specialising in ribs, steaks and burgers, they are entrenched as a family favourite. The carvery once a week is worth the wait (021 552 8626).
The carvery at Dale’s Black Angus Grill, The Paddocks, on the last Sunday of the month is a good bet (021 424 1210).
3 Drink
Arguably featuring the best views in the Peninsula, Maestro’s on Woodbridge Island is a great place to calm down after a frenetic. 021 551 4992.
4 Shop
Milnerton Flea Market has been going for 20 years. If it’s brica-brac you’re looking for – or to get rid of – this is the ideal venue. Entrance and parking are free (021 551 7879).
For a more conventional shopping experience, The Paddocks offers more than 40 shops, chain stores, boutiques, restaurants and fast-food outlets.
