One of several sub-areas in this particular part of Cape Town, Bloubergstrand is situated along the shores of Table Bay, north of the city centre, and its name translates directly as “blue mountain beach”, accurately describing it in one Afrikaans word.
Mainly a residential area, with a number of eating, drinking and shopping options, Bloubergstrand has a long and spectacular beach with the typical postcard view of Table Mountain.

Being on the cold side of the Peninsula – the Atlantic Ocean – swimming is reserved for the brave (or foolish), but harvesting your own mussels is totally doable. Black mussels can be plucked off the rocks at low tide, and the more elusive white mussels can be coaxed out of the sand by “jiving” (the movement being similar to the dance).
“Everything you need is close by, and if you need to get to town it’s a short drive away, and you can even skip traffic by catching a MyCiti bus,” says resident Alexander May. “You are also spoilt for choice with a long stretch of beach, and of course the scores of overseas kite surfers add to the holiday feeling. For a sundowner, nothing beats watching the sunset from the lawn at Blue Peter, or you can head over to News Café on Marine Circle for a cocktail.”

Open daily from 8am till 5pm, Café Blouberg is about as close to the rocks and waves as you can get, without actually being on the beach. Large malls are the order of the day in this area, crammed with retailers providing everything you could possibly need. Eden on the Bay Mall offers shopping, restaurants, coffee shops and more, including the ubiquitous view, surfing on the doorstep, and lawns for picnics.
