The sale will take place on December 12 at 10am at the company’s premises at 43 Church Street, Cape Town.

Items that will be considered for auction include silver, jewellery, objects d’art, ceramics, clocks, bronze sculptures, antique and contemporary furniture, and South African and international works of art.

Ashbey’s Galleries has been known in Cape Town’s art and antiques circles since 1891, when Edwin Rivers Ashbey started a small picture framing and artists’ materials shop in Whitehall, at the corner of Burg Street and Greenmarket Square.

The business changed hands in 1914 to the Robinson family with Morris first in charge before handing the reins to his son, Basil, in 1946. Basil developed the business further and incorporated frequent art and antique auctions.

After many moves, Ashbey’s Galleries finally settled in 1962 in its current premises at 43-51 Church Street, a Georgian double-storey building dating from the mid-1700s. The company’s highlights over the years include staging the first exhibitions of some of South Africa’s most respected artists such as Irma Stern and JH Pierneef.
