Buddhist work is expected to fetch R12.2m at auction

The auction features an impressive selection of Indian and south-east Asian sculptures from the collection of the renowned Californian patrons of the arts, Dorothy and Richard Sherwood; a rare group of Himalayan bronzes; Sri Lankan bronze and stone sculptures from an important private collection and a selection of fine Indian paintings.

It will also include south-east Asian stone and bronze sculptures, led by a 14th- to 15th-century Tibetan gilt-bronze sculpture of Vajrasattva, Buddhism’s “Great Purifier” deity.
