The neighbouring KZN National Botanic Gardens, established in 1874, are known for their 200m Plane Tree Avenue of 46 London plane trees, each over 40m tall, planted in 1908 by William Edward Marriott, then gardens curator. One visitor was President Paul Kruger who planted a Camellia japonica in April 1891.

The gardens offer visitors a tranquil experience in the heart of suburbia with a natural forest, insect hotel, clivia dam, cycad garden and permaculture garden. As living tribute to South Africa’s multicultural heritage, visitors can enjoy a Xhosa experience in the Pondoland garden and a Zulu experience in the Zulu garden, which features a walk through the educational muthi (medicine) garden with its wide range of indigenous medicinal plants.
