Chaos erupted in Gqeberha as an intense shoot-out unfolded during the dramatic rescue of an American pastor who had been kidnapped at gunpoint during a church service in Motherwell last week, ending with three suspects fatally shot in the fierce standoff.

The Star previously reported that Sullivan, originally from Tennessee, was allegedly abducted by a group of armed men during a church service in Motherwell township. His disappearance was later confirmed by the Fellowship Baptist Church in Maryville, Tennessee, which took to social media to urge congregants and supporters to pray for his safe return.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba confirmed that Sullivan was located on April 15, held captive at a safe house in KwaMagxaki, Gqeberha.

Fumba stated that the operation followed verified intelligence, and a coordinated team comprising the Serious Organised Crime Investigation team of the Hawks, Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence, Tactical Response Team, and other key law enforcement partners moved swiftly to the identified location.

He added that as soon as the suspects spotted law enforcement officers approaching, they opened fire, triggering a fierce gun battle.

“As officers approached the house, they observed a vehicle on the premises. The suspects inside the vehicle, upon seeing law enforcement, allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the team. The officers responded with tactical precision, leading to a high-intensity shootout in which three unidentified suspects were fatally wounded.”

Fumba stated that Sullivan was discovered inside the very vehicle used by the suspects to launch their attack. Remarkably, he was found unharmed and was promptly evaluated by medical personnel, with reports confirming he is in excellent condition.

He expressed his gratitude to all the teams and stakeholders who helped rescue Sullivan, praising their dedication and collaborative efforts that led to a safe outcome.

“We extend sincere appreciation to all role players, including our law enforcement members, the public, international partners, and both local and international media, whose support and vigilance were instrumental in this success.

“As investigations continue, we respectfully request privacy for the victim and his family as they navigate this period of recovery.

“Anyone with credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation is urged to contact the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or submit tips anonymously via the MySAPS App,” he added.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in the Eastern Cape, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, commended the operational team for their courage, discipline and tactical excellence under fire. He also thanked senior government officials for their visible and personal support during this critical period, reaffirming that such united efforts send a strong message to those who threaten the safety and sovereignty of our nation.
