Pretoria - The Cullinan road rehabilitation project must be completed on time and on budget, to satisfy both the community and the department, says MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo.

Mamabolo was once again reiterating the importance of completing the project on time, cost effectively, and at the required standard of quality, as agreed in the project contract agreement. The department has recently established a compliance office to curb delays and put an end to shoddy work.

Mamabolo visited the community to launch the project. The road plays a vital role in connecting travellers and commuters in Pretoria to other parts of the province and beyond. Economically it is important as goods are moved across the country using the road.

Costing R90 million, the rehabilitation work is being carried out as part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Ntirhisano Service Delivery Outreach Programme, aimed at resolving service delivery challenges in the province.

The scope of works includes improving the pavement structure; repairing gravel shoulders; cutting side and open drains; removing silt from existing culverts, installing four new culverts under Road D483, and nine new culverts under access roads.

“The Transport Infrastructure Compliance Office will be closely monitoring progress to ensure the engineering team and the contractor stick to the agreement with us. This office will help the department protect public funds by ensuring the delivery of the project as per the agreed standards and time frames.

“It will also help us rationalise contract management, administration and the compliance of parties to Service Level Agreements. The set completion date will not be changed. All our projects should be completed on time,” said the MEC.

Mamabolo said the site construction reporting tool will be used to monitor and report daily activities on site. This will allow for timely intervention whenever delays are registered.

The department will be undertaking several roads projects– upgrading Road K101 (Phase 1) from the N1 Rooihuiskraal Interchange to Olifantsfontein Road in Midrand; upgrading the R82

(Phase 3) between Walkerville and De Deur; and constructing the new Road K60 between Megawatt Park (Maxwell Drive) and Kyalami Road.
