Pretoria - ANC senior member and head of policy Jeff Radebe has reassured the media that the step-aside resolution will be heavily debated at the party's 6th National Policy Conference currently taking place at Nasrec in Johannesburg.

This is despite earlier reports that party chairperson Gwede Mantashe had promised that the step-aside rule would not be scrapped by the end of the conference on Sunday.

The rule has sown divisions within the party in recent years with some party members accusing officials of using the rule for factional battles.

The rule has affected suspended secretary general Ace Magashule who has had to step-aside from all party activities after facing criminal charges of corruption.

About 200 ANC members were fingered in the state capture report that was chaired by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo paving the way for them to step-aside.

Addressing the media on Friday afternoon Radebe said it was important for the organisation to confront the issue head on and come with solutions.

He said: “We are a democratic movement and we are looking forward to motivation from party members regarding that matter. I expect that issue to come out very strongly. The matter will not be suppressed at all.”

Radebe also confirmed that there were about 200 people fingered in the Zondo report.

“I can confirm that the Zondo report has found that about 200 names have been mentioned so we are doing a verification report for now and we will take it from there,” Radebe said.

At the moment, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo are the only provincial bodies that have come out to condemn the step-aside rule.
