MTN South Africa is leading the charge in bringing modern, connected living to every South African, with an impressive expansion of its 5G and LTE networks. By continuing its robust network modernisation efforts, MTN is ensuring that its customers—whether in bustling urban centres or remote rural areas—can enjoy fast, reliable, and resilient connectivity.
In 2024 alone, MTN has modernised more than 400 network sites, reaching a network availability score of over 98%, and there’s more on the horizon with 25% additional sites slated for modernisation by year’s end. The company's ongoing commitment to excellence means MTN customers can stay connected and benefit from a truly digital lifestyle, no matter the weather conditions or unexpected power outages that might come their way.
At the heart of MTN’s advancements lies the expansion of its 5G network, which now covers 44% of South Africa—a significant increase from 35% at the start of the year. Rural areas, including Madikwe in the North-West, Rooiwal in the Western Cape, and Coldstream in the Eastern Cape, have all benefitted from the enhanced network coverage. In total, MTN has already deployed LTE at over 1,060 sites across the country, with further rollouts underway.
Rami Farah, MTN SA’s Executive for Network, explains: "Our network team is continuously optimising and upgrading our infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of our customers. Despite challenges like load reduction and severe weather, our resilience efforts have ensured that we maintain a high standard of service availability."
This year alone, MTN has added 145 new base stations, modernised over 400 sites, and upgraded the capacity at more than 1,000 existing sites. As part of its 5G 2024 deployment programme, the company has rolled out 5G across more than 900 sites, with a focus on utilising the midband spectrum to expand coverage nationwide.
Looking ahead, MTN is not only focused on individual consumers but also on businesses and industries. Four commercial proposals for 5G Private Networks are currently in development, with sectors such as mining, manufacturing, education, and logistics poised to benefit from this cutting-edge technology. These proposals are expected to be finalised by early 2025, further underscoring MTN’s commitment to driving South Africa’s digital transformation.
While network expansion continues to reach new heights, challenges such as vandalism and theft remain a concern. However, MTN is making strides in mitigating these issues through heightened security measures and increased community involvement. In the past quarter alone, there were 2,000 reported incidents of vandalism and theft across the country, particularly in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. Despite these challenges, MTN remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard its infrastructure and deliver uninterrupted service.
Farah notes, "We are working closely with law enforcement and implementing stronger security measures to combat criminal activity. Our customers can rest assured that we are fully committed to protecting our infrastructure and ensuring their connectivity remains uninterrupted."
In line with its sustainability efforts, MTN is also making significant investments in renewable energy. A prime example is the MTN South Africa Solar Park, which boasts a 5MW Solar PV installation paired with a 2MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a 6MWh capacity. This project is part of the company's ongoing effort to drive innovation while minimizing its environmental footprint.
As Farah concludes, "Our mission is simple: to connect the previously unconnected and ensure everyone has access to the digital world. Whether it's keeping in touch with family, celebrating a Springbok win, or accessing educational resources and business opportunities, we are committed to delivering connectivity that makes life better for all South Africans."
Criminals have persistently taken advantage of the cover of darkness to carry out their activities, but our collective fightback, supported by our communities, has been resilient. MTN encourages all South Africans to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour by calling 083 123 7867 or emailing [email protected]. Together, we are stronger in ensuring that our infrastructure is protected, and our connectivity remains uninterrupted.
