A raging fire tore through the Egoli Informal Settlement in Schaapkraal, Philippi, in the early hours of Saturday, March 15, leaving more than 100 people homeless and destroying at least 35 shacks.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services dispatched 15 firefighting resources, including a Type 4 Incident Management Team (IMT), to contain the blaze.

Fire and Rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed that crews worked for hours before managing to put out the fire.

Community leader Beryl Williams described the devastation.

"It's very sad because they lost everything," Williams said.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that a candle left unattended may have caused the fire, exacerbated by strong winds.

"One lady said she thinks it was a candle, and the wind was very strong on Saturday," said Williams.

Many residents in the informal settlement rely on candles for light due to the lack of electricity, increasing the risk of such tragedies.

Despite the destruction, relief efforts from community organizations and individuals have been swift.

Gift of the Givers and ward councillor, Elton Jansen, were present to assess the situation.

"So far, nothing was given from the City of Cape Town, " said Williams.

Residents and businesses stepped up to provide emergency aid.

"Neighbours in the surrounding area provided food and clothes," said Williams.

while community worker Captain Keith Blake from Ottery donated clothes, toiletries, pots, and pans to help affected families.

Additionally, Pick n Pay Constantia contributed fruit, vegetables, rolls, and cakes for displaced residents.

Community leaders are calling for more donations, including blankets, food, and building materials, to help those who lost their homes rebuild.
