Being the passenger or driver of an e-hailing service can be disconcerting as one does not know whether to trust the other party.

An e-hailing driver from the Western Cape found himself in this situation, but luckily, the authorities intervened before the worst could happen.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said Nyanga police reacted to a request to disclose a location with an e-hailing driver on Tuesday.

“The police members warned the man of the dangers. However, he persisted and the members opted to followed him into the area,” said Swartbooi said.

He added that when they arrived at the stated location, they noticed three suspicious males and approached them tactically, catching them in the act of coordinating with accomplices to rob the approaching e-hailing driver.

“The police members detained the three males for the possession of presumed stolen property, attempted robbery and the possession of an imitation firearm,” Swartbooi said.

Once charged, the suspects are anticipated to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on the aforementioned allegations.

In a separate incident, suspects were caught in separate occasions when they were discovered in possession of a restricted firearm, ammunition, probable stolen items, and an imitation handgun.

“Police members were busy with disruptive stop and search operations in Barcelona informal settlement on Monday, October 28 when they followed up on information at their disposal and entered a home in the informal settlement where they searched the occupants and in the process confiscated a 9mm pistol and ammunition.”

They apprehended a 31-year-old man for possessing an illegal handgun and ammunition.
