Large, luxurious and a technological over-achiever of note, the new Volvo EX90 is launching in South Africa this week.
It takes pride of place as the brand's new flagship SUV, although it doesn't replace the XC90 just yet, with the internal-combustion engined flagship set to stick around for the time being in facelifted form.
Update: The Volvo EX90 is priced at R2.65 million, offered in a single, and full-house specification grade.
Built on Volvo's new SPA2 platform, the EX90 is very much a super-computer on wheels, with computing and graphics via Snapdragon and Epic Games, and one of the most advanced sensor sets on the market.
This safety suite comprises eight cameras, 16 ultrasonic sensors, five radars and a roof-mounted Lidar sensor that can see small objects hundreds of metres ahead.
The cabin boasts a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen infotainment system powered by Android software and featuring Google-linked operating systems and applications.
Available in fully electric guise only, the EX90 features a 111 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack. This enables a claimed range of 751km in urban driving and 604km on the combined cycle, meaning it should be able to tackle most long-distance journeys with ease.
When using a 250kW DC fast charger, the battery can be juiced up from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, Volvo claims.
The Twin Motor Performance model is the only powertrain variant offered in SA, and boasts power outputs of 380kW and 910Nm, allowing for a 4.9 second 0-100km/h sprint that very much belies the vehicle's substantial size.
“The EX90 has already made a strong impression internationally, and we’re thrilled to see it debut on South African roads,” said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car SA marketing head.
“With its cutting-edge safety features and luxurious interior, the EX90 embodies the essence of a flagship Volvo, redefining perceptions of electrified luxury.”
