Seattle, Washington - On Friday 31 July Jack Beckman became the first person to run the standing 1000 feet (304 metres - the standard United States quarter-mile was shortened by 97.5 metres in 2008) in less than four seconds in a funny car, when he ran a 3.921 second pass at 517.48km/h in his Infinite Hero Dodge Charger R/T.
The car is powered by a supercharged, seven-litre Chrysler Hemi engine running on nitromethane fuel and capable of producing an estimated 5150kW.
Eight days later, in the final qualifying session for the Northwest Nationals in Seattle, he ran a 3.912. Don't blink while you watch the video - you'll miss at least 100 metres of the action!
