DURBAN - EThekwini Municipality is to host an indaba with informal traders to identify job opportunities and promote growth.
EThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda is set to outline strategies at the event, which is aimed at transforming the economy of the City’s informal sector into an efficient and competitive one.
The indaba is scheduled to take place on Wednesday this week, from 8am.
The City said the Informal Traders Indaba will be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC), with simultaneous events being held in 13 other areas.
“Mayor Kaunda will also unpack plans to upgrade infrastructure for informal traders in eThekwini, following the civil unrest that crippled the sector. Sector stakeholders will also have an opportunity to voice their opinions on how the City can assist them take the sector forward.
“The informal traders’ sector is very important to the city’s economy as it contributes over R8billion, which translates to more than nine percent of the Gross Domestic Product. This sector is also a major provider of employment, goods and services for lower income groups,” said the municipality.
The City encouraged traders to attend at venues close to them and appealed for compliance with all Covid-19 safety regulations.
