On a recent jaunt down the South Coast we stopped at a famed Ramsgate institution for a late lunch The Waffle House.
It’s been an institution with generations of tourists (yes, it was established in 1957) enjoying its array of crisp home-made waffles with a never-ending variety of toppings and fillings, both sweet and savoury.
We sat on the enclosed deck with views out over the Ramsgate lagoon and the sea. The bad weather was rolling in fast with rain lashing the perspex blinds. But, dry from the elements, we were happy to take in the scene. Service, too, was swift and friendly in a well-oiled establishment.
For vegetarians waffle choices could include avo and hummus, or mushrooms in cheese sauce or a mild coconut-based vegetable curry. There are options of spinach with eggs, ham, cheese and tomato to a chicken curry or even a steak and kidney or traditional bobotie waffle. There is also a breakfast menu with a number of options with eggs. Or savoury mince or a combination of both. There is even a full Belgian breakfast. That’s a full English piled on top of a waffle.
Sweet varieties might include waffles with macadamia nuts or choc chips, or waffles topped with Dutch apple. I had that the last time we visited some years back and it was most enjoyable. For the more adventurous there’s even a lemon meringue waffle and a banoffee waffle.
We opted for the specials. A friend went for the waffle with macadamia nut and lentil pate served with avo and a small side salad. The waffles were fresh crisp and light, and the pate had a lovely flavour. I opted for a waffle with Italian meatballs in a homemade tomato sauce. These were very tasty and topped with a good dollop of creme fraiche. We were both happy with our finds.
We sat out the rest of the storm over a decent coffee before the long trip back to Durban.
