At 73 - years -old , Ayoob Adam defies age conventions as he continues to play the field with his unwavering passion for soccer.
Adam, a member of the Isipingo Veterans in the Golden Oldies League, recently earned the accolade of the oldest player, a testament not just to his age but to 58 years of devotion to the game.
Originating as a young footballer at the age of 14 in 1966, Adam’s journey is rich with accolades and experiences that illustrate both talent and dedication.
"Back in the day, soccer was the only outlet sport available. It was inexpensive and required minimal cost. The first and only club I played for was Protea Power FC," recounted Adam.
His talent was apparent early on; Adam represented Clairwood High and Natal High Schools, and for a decade, was selected for the Mid-South Coast and the Isipingo District Football Association (IDFA).
Notably, he served as the captain during his 10th year with the IDFA Southern Natal Soccer Board, showcasing his leadership and skill on the field.
Despite his promising prospects of turning professional, Adam made a difficult choice to forgo a professional contract for financial reasons.
However, this decision did not dampen his love for sport. "I am still playing and coaching in the Isipingo Junior Soccer Academy because I want to give back. In that way, I keep fit and, importantly, impart my knowledge to the younger generation," he said.
Adam has participated in all of the Veterans games and previously played several matches for the over-50 side in the past year.
"Although it may look difficult, I maintain my fitness by training and having fun while coaching the kids at the Isipingo Academy. I play and exercise with them; it keeps me fit and ready for my games," he added.
Adam said he was proud to receive the award for being the oldest player. "I was thrilled to be honoured by both the League and my Club, not just for my age but in being an inspiration to our community," said Adam.
"God willing, I plan to keep this up for as long as I can. My son is also a talented footballer, and I keep encouraging him that to reach my level, he needs to work harder," he said.
As a grandfather of five, Adam is passionate about encouraging the younger generation to become more active.
"They need to embrace the outdoors and play a sport—your body and mind will thank you! It’s not just about staying fit; it's about building friendships, learning discipline, and the joy of pushing your limits while having fun. Balance screen time with active play," he advised.
Ronnie Vengan, a Life member of Isipingo Football, echoed Adam’s influence, saying, "Apart from playing for the Veteran Isipingo Soccer Legends team at 73, Ayoob Adam has selflessly served Isipingo Football for over 50 years—as a player, referee, and coach. His dedication goes beyond what words can describe."
Vengan added that Adam as one of the best players he has witnessed, expressing admiration for Adam's commitment to training both himself and younger generation.
“Adam's incredible journey is a remarkable reminder that age can never define one’s passion or potential. He stands as an enduring symbol of perseverance, proving that with dedication and love for the sport, the game never truly ages,” he said.
