DURBAN - A young woman had to be airlifted to hospital after falling off a horse on Christmas Day.
Underberg Emergency Medical Services (UEMS) manager Kate Bodmann said at 11am UEMS were called out for a person who had fallen off a horse at a local B&B on the Drak Gardens Road.
“On arrival, UEMS paramedics found a 34-year-old female who’d fallen off a horse while on an out ride with her family and sustained a serious injury to her lower leg.”
“Due to the nature of her injury, Netcare 911 helicopter was called. The patient was handed over in a stable condition to Netcare 911 crews and flown to a Pietermaritzburg hospital for further specialised care,” Bodmann said.
He thanked Brett and Debby Deavin from Berg Protection Services Drakensberg and Netcare 911 who assisted.
Earlier this month an elderly woman had to be airlifted to the hospital after she fell and injured her leg at a Midlands hotel.
At the time, Bodmann said they received a call from the Drakensberg Gardens Hotel manager informing them that someone had fallen and injured her leg.
When paramedics arrived, they found that a 66-year-old woman had stepped off a wall approximately 50cm in height and severely injured her left lower leg.
Due to the nature of the injury she sustained and the likelihood of a threatened limb, a call was made to Netcare 911 flight desk.
The woman was stabilised by UEMS paramedics before being flown to a specialised medical facility in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment.
